A full day in one of Italy's most architecturally complete medieval cities. Siena's great shell-shaped Piazza del Campo is the heart of contrade life — and in June, the 17 neighborhoods are deep in preparation for the Palio (July 2). Walk into the Duomo and its extraordinary Piccolomini Library, climb the Torre del Mangia for a 360° panorama of Tuscany, and spend the afternoon wandering the atmospheric streets beyond the tourist spine. A city best experienced slowly, with a long lunch in between.

Why This Flow?
Siena is arranged around the Piazza del Campo, which is the natural gathering point. You'll start there at opening, experience the tower climb for panoramic views, then move to the Duomo complex immediately north (a 15-minute walk uphill via Via di Città). After the Duomo and Piccolomini Library, lunch comes naturally in the maze of side streets where real Siena lives. The afternoon flows through the contrade neighborhoods and back toward the parking lot, avoiding tourist congestion by moving counterclockwise from the Campo.

Stop 1 Piazza del Campo & Torre del Mangia ~9:45 AM – 11:15 AM · ~1h 30min

The most beautiful civic piazza in Italy — and the stage for the Palio

🅿 Parking
Parcheggio Stadio Fortezza — 698 spaces on two levels, €2/hr. 10-minute walk downhill to the Campo. The most reliable parking in Siena. Don't attempt to drive into the centro storico; it's entirely ZTL.  Google Maps →
The Piazza del Campo

The Campo's distinctive shell shape — nine travertine segments radiating from the Palazzo Pubblico — is unique in Italy. In June, you'll see contrade flags and hear preparations for the July 2 Palio. The Fonte Gaia (Fountain of Joy) sits at the top of the piazza — a 19th-century replica of Jacopo della Quercia's 1419 original (the real pieces are in Santa Maria della Scala). Sit on the sloping brick surface and take it in before heading to the tower.

Torre del Mangia

400+ steps, 102 meters, extraordinary 360° views of Tuscany. Tickets are €10 or €15 as a combo with Museo Civico. Timed entry, sold on-site only at the Palazzo Pubblico base. Best time: open (usually 10 AM) or mid-afternoon to avoid crowds.

Tower Strategy
Arrive early or go mid-afternoon. Timed slots fill up during peak mid-morning hours. Go at opening (10 AM) when the view is crisp and the crowds haven't arrived. Alternatively, tackle the tower at 2:30 PM after lunch. Closed 1:45–2:30 PM for cleaning.

Stop 2 The Duomo Complex ~11:15 AM – 12:45 PM · ~1h 30min

One of Italy's greatest Gothic cathedrals — and a library that will stop you in your tracks

The walk from the Campo to the Duomo goes uphill via Via di Città, one of Siena's most beautiful medieval streets. Palazzo Chigi-Saracini is on the left, artisan shops line the way, and the gentle climb takes about 15 minutes. You'll emerge at the cathedral piazza at the summit of the old town.

The Cathedral

Black and white striped marble columns, Nicola Pisano's 13th-century pulpit, and the extraordinary marble floor (often covered for preservation — but sections visible in June). The interior is a masterclass in Italian Gothic craftsmanship. Don't miss the side chapels.

Piccolomini Library

Pinturicchio's 15 frescoes (1502–1509) illuminate the walls in vivid color — one of the most visually stunning rooms in Italy. Take your time. This is not a space to rush through.

Baptistery & Crypt

Included in the OPA SI Pass. The Baptistery has a Renaissance font with panels by Donatello, Ghiberti, and della Quercia. The Crypt is a sacred, quiet space with frescoes and a sense of centuries.

Booking the Duomo
The OPA SI Pass (€15–20) should be purchased in advance at operaduomo.siena.it. It includes Cathedral, Piccolomini Library, Baptistery, Crypt, and Museum. Valid for 3 days — no need to rush. Skip the line by buying online.

Pici, Cinta Senese, and a proper Tuscan table — off the tourist path

RestaurantDetails
Osteria Il Grattacielo Via dei Pontani 8, Siena
Small, historic, daily-changing menu. Pici all'aglione (thick pasta with garlic-tomato sauce) is the house classic. Ribollita in cooler weather. Honest prices, local crowd, no frills. €15–22 per person. No reservations — arrive by 12:45 PM or expect a wait.
Enoteca I Terzi Via dei Termini 7, Siena
Slightly more polished — excellent wine list, refined Tuscan dishes with local ingredients. Pici, Cinta Senese pork, seasonal specials. €20–30 per person. Reserve ahead: +39 0577 46329. Strong wine program if you want to taste beyond the local.
Recommendation
Il Grattacielo is the more authentic choice — locals only, no tourists, casual. Enoteca I Terzi if the group prefers a slightly more refined setting and wants to explore wine. Either way, both are a short walk from the Duomo in the contrade neighborhoods.
What to Order

Pici all'aglione — fat hand-rolled pasta with a garlicky tomato sauce, the signature dish of Siena. Cinta Senese — local heritage pork, grilled or in a ragù. Ribollita — if available. Local Chianti Classico or Vino Nobile by the glass.

Stop 4 Afternoon Wandering ~2:15 PM – 3:30 PM · ~1h 15min

Beyond the tourist spine — the neighborhoods the guidebooks skip

After lunch, resist the pull back to the Campo. Instead, head into the contrade neighborhoods where the real Siena lives. In June, the streets are decorated with contrada flags and the energy of Palio preparation is everywhere. The alleys between the Campo and San Domenico are some of the best in the city — atmospheric, quiet, full of Sienese character.

Via Banchi di Sopra & San Domenico

Walk north from the Campo along the main shopping street, then descend toward the massive Basilica of San Domenico (where Saint Catherine's head is kept — genuinely). The views back toward the Duomo from here are excellent. The basilica interior is stark and powerful.

Fontebranda & the Oca Contrada

Below San Domenico, the medieval Fontebranda fountain sits in one of the most atmospheric corners of the city. The surrounding Oca (Goose) contrada is fiercely proud and visually decorated in its colors (white and black with the goose emblem). This is the Siena tourists miss.

For Chuck & Jane
You've both been to Siena before — use that. Show Mary the spots most tourists walk past. The alleys, the quiet piazzas, the contrada shrines and flags. This is where Siena's soul is, not in the guidebook attractions. Take time to get lost deliberately.
